Every plaster needs a good substrat, especially with Tadelakt this is very important. Firstly, Tadelakt is a very valuable plaster that you don’t even want to replace every few years. In addition, a beautifully crafted Tadelakt is a feast for the eyes.

If the substrate for Tadelakt consists of clay, it should be thoroughly roughened and provided with a strong layer of lime plaster as a base plaster. Always use clay substrates for tadelakt only in dry areas inside the house. The danger that moisture can penetrate into the clay through small pores through the Tadelakt is great and the damage is enormous. For Tadelakt installation in wet areas, we always recommend waterproof building materials that do not dissolve due to moisture, e.g. bricks, lime plasters, cement plasters, concrete, natural stone, etc. Always use Tadelakt on slowly absorbing substrates; depending on the circumstances, moisten the substrate sometimes more or less with water. Substrates that absorb too slowly can also be a nuisance for the rapid processing of Tadelakt, after all, you sometimes want to finish the work process. In Morocco, where I learned Tadelakt 40 years ago, almost everything is done using a lime-cement plaster. They worked there in large teams where everyone knew what they had to do.
