Wattle And Daub Open Air Museum

Arnhem

Back to overview

Wattle and daub Tierrafino earth building, applied on walls in the Open Air Museum in Arnhem, Netherlands. In the 1990s, we were asked to rebuild and restore various medieval historical buildings using original ancient techniques. Nothing was more enjoyable than doing this. We rolled up our sleeves and began this wonderful work.

Wattle and daub is constructed with oak beams, the vertical stakes are also oak, the horizontal wattle is made of three-year-old split willow rods, the mortar mixture consists of clay, lime, straw and horse urine. This mixture provides good weather protection. With thanks to Andre Schopman, Virginia Velasco, the helpers and the management of the open-air museum.
